The rules

Registering a car in Germany

What to know

  • You register your car at the registration office (Zulassungsstelle) of the city where you live. You need a registered address in Germany first.
  • Before the appointment you need insurance: the insurer gives you an eVB number.
  • The car tax is paid by direct debit (SEPA), so you need a bank account. Someone else can also pay it for you.
  • The office fee depends on the city, roughly €25–60. A custom plate costs about €10 more. You pay both at the office.
  • The plates are made by a plate shop, usually next to the office. You pay them there.
  • At the appointment the car is usually registered the same day.
  • You may not drive an unregistered car. For a short trip, for example to the TÜV, there are short-term plates valid up to 5 days.

Questions

Questions

Can I register a car without a German address?

Usually not: you register at the office of the city where you live, so you need a registered address first. We can help you with the Anmeldung too.

Do I need a German bank account?

The car tax is paid by direct debit, so you need a bank account for it. Someone else can also pay the tax for you. We show you the options.

What is an eVB and how do I get one?

The eVB is a code from your car insurer that confirms the car is insured. You need it before the appointment. We work with an insurance partner who can arrange it for you.

Do I have to come to the office?

With door to door, no: you sign a power of attorney and we register the car for you. With online help, you go yourself, fully prepared.

What does door to door cost in the end?

€145 for the preparation, fixed, plus €145 per hour for the time at the office. The hours are billed after the appointment. Example: €145 + about 2 hours = about €435.

What is the paper check?

For €49, we check the car papers (Part I and II), the purchase contract and the TÜV date before you pay the seller, so you do not buy a car that cannot be registered.

Do I pay now?

No. We confirm your booking and send you a secure payment link. You pay only then.

Which fees are not in your price?

The office fee (about €25–60), the plates, a custom plate (about €10 more), insurance, car tax and a TÜV inspection if needed. You pay these directly.

Does a dealer register the car for me?

Often yes, sometimes for a fee. Ask the dealer first. If they don’t, we can.

I moved to another city. Do I need to re-register?

Yes, your car must be registered at your new address. Online help for this costs €99.

My car is from another EU country. Can you help?

Yes. You need the foreign papers, the COC and usually a German TÜV inspection. You also deregister the car in the other country yourself; we tell you how.

And cars from outside the EU?

We do not offer this at the moment: it needs customs clearance and a full technical report.
