Start with the visa — everything depends on it

The visa decides your timeline, your start date and sometimes even which family members can come. Most failed moves fail here: people book flights and flats before they know which visa category they qualify for.

Identify your exact visa category before planning anything else.
Embassy appointment slots can take weeks — book the moment you decide.
A qualifying job offer often unlocks faster routes (e.g. EU Blue Card).

Get your documents in order — and translated

Birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, police records. Authorities want originals, apostilles and certified translations — and getting them from abroad later is painful.

Collect originals while you are still in your home country.
Use certified (sworn) translators — regular translations get rejected.
Make two copies of everything; scan everything to one folder.

Regulated profession? Start recognition early

Doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, pharmacists: your qualification must be officially recognised before you can work. Recognition can take months — it should start before you move, not after.

Check if your profession is regulated in the destination country.
Recognition and language certificates often run in parallel — start both.

Never sign a home you haven’t seen

Rental scams target newcomers, and photos hide a lot. In hot markets, real listings also disappear within days — which pushes people into bad decisions.

Insist on a live video viewing if you cannot be there in person.
Never transfer a deposit before a contract and identity check.
Local representation gets your application taken seriously.

Bridge with temporary accommodation

The smartest movers don’t try to find their forever home from abroad. They book 4–8 weeks of furnished temporary housing and search properly after arrival.

A registered address is what matters for your first weeks — make sure the temp flat allows registration.
Calculate the overlap into your budget; it pays for itself in better long-term rent.

The registration deadline nobody tells you about

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland you must register your address within days of moving in (Anmeldung). Without it: no bank account, no contracts, sometimes no salary. It is the hidden key to everything.

Appointments in big cities book out weeks ahead — reserve before you fly.
You need the landlord’s confirmation form — ask for it at key handover.

Banking & tax — the order matters

Bank account needs registration; salary needs the bank; tax ID arrives by post after registration. Do it in the wrong order and you wait weeks. Do it right and it all lands in days.

Registration → tax ID → bank account → salary details: that’s the order.
Some modern banks open accounts before arrival — useful as a bridge.
Tell your home bank you’re moving; frozen cards abroad are common.

Insurance is not optional

Health insurance is legally required in most European countries — and visa applications often demand proof of it. Liability insurance is cheap and expected; in some rentals it’s effectively mandatory.

Health cover must usually start on day one, not after you settle.
Expats often need international cover for the transition months.
Household + liability insurance costs little and saves real money.

Schools & childcare — deadlines beat wish-lists

Everyone researches the best schools; few check the enrollment cut-off dates. A missed deadline can mean months of waiting — the single most common reason family moves get delayed.

Contact schools before you choose your neighbourhood, not after.
International schools have application windows; public schools depend on your address.
Daycare waitlists in big cities can be a year — register early, everywhere.

The settling-in month — what successful movers do

Week one is logistics. The first month decides whether the move feels like home: utilities, internet, doctor registration, driving license exchange, language routine, and actually meeting people.

Set up utilities and internet in week one — installation slots lag.
Register with a local doctor before you need one.
Check the deadline for exchanging your driving license — it expires.
